We are now in the Season After Pentecost. The Day of Pentecost was the last and crowning day of Easter, but Pentecost also pours forth the Spirit of God and Jesus into the season ahead. It is a period also known as Ordinary Time. The “ordinary” comes from the ordinal numerals we use to count and name the Sundays after Pentecost. But it is also “ordinary” in the sense that it presents no special events in the story of Jesus and his Holy Spirit as do Advent, Christmas, the Epiphany, Good Friday, Easter, and Pentecost. Still, it is a vital season in the life of the church for it is a time for the Spirit’s power to inspire and strengthen Christians for worship, mission, and service. It is a season for learning about our faith as we discover whether we will have eyes that see and ears that hear, and we try our best to follow Jesus and the guidance of his Spirit in the ways of justice, peace, and loving service.
